AFROGenius (2023)
The Amistad Center’s Summer teen program, AFROgenius, was created in collaboration with Hartford-based documentarian and video artist, Nivia Easterling. The six-week program engaged eight teens from organizations such as but not exclusive to the Blue Hills Civic Association and the Greater Hartford Chapter of Jack & Jill in the creation and video documentation of three tableaux vivants inspired by various African American artists. Through guided research and art-making, the participants engaged the global canon of art and art literacy within a museum setting. This program was made possible by funds provided by the State of CT through the American Rescue Plan Act – Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund – administered by the CT Office of the Arts, Department of Economic & Community Development. Additional support provided by the Greater Hartford Chapter of Jack & Jill of America Inc. Special thanks to Blue Hills Civic Association and the Capitol Region Education Council.
